Underdog: #LoveOzYA Short Stories

‘The Chinese Menu for the Afterlife' by Vivian Wei

“#LoveOzYA celebrates the best of new Australian writing for teenagers. It has grown from a humble hashtag into a movement, reflecting the important role young-adult fiction plays in shaping our current generation of readers. This anthology collects, for the first time, some of the tremendous work from the #LoveOzYA community.

The Chinese Menu for the Afterlife details a cultural exploration of grief and food. Through the vivid account of a traditional Chinese funeral, the author seeks to understand her experience of cultural dichotomy as an Australian-born Chinese.

Sydney Living Museums: A Thousand Words Exhibition (with WestWords)

“A Thousand Words presents 100 of the most compelling photographic images from the rich collections of Sydney Living Museums and the State Archives and Records Authority of NSW, created between the 1880s and the 1980s.

WestWords and Sydney Living Museums commissioned 10 emerging western Sydney artists to respond to an image they selected from the exhibition.”

Vivian’s piece responds to a historical image (ATW033) through the lens of Australia’s Gold Rush and presents a cultural perspective of that time.
